that it is rejecting TransCanadaÕa $7-billion
Keystone XL pipeline project.

OTTAWA — U.S. President Barack ObamaÕs decision to reject
a permit for TransCanada CorpÕs Keystone XL oil pipeline may prompt Canada to
turn to China for oil exports.
ÔBeyond disputeÕ Iran is building a nuclear weapon: PM
OTTAWA
— It is beyond dispute that Iran is developing nuclear weapons and lying
about it, Prime Minister Stephen Harper told CBC News chief correspondent Peter
Mansbridge. In an exclusive interview, Harper says
the evidence, some from the International Atomic Energy Agency, is overwhelming
that Iran has a nuclear weapons program.
HMCS Charlottetown heads to the Mediterranean
HALIFAX
— A large crowd packed the Halifax waterfront Jan 8 to wave goodbye to
their loved ones as HMCS Charlottetown departed for a mission in the
Mediterranean Sea.
The
navy frigate has a crew of about 250 and will be gone for seven months.
Liberals elects Crawley
over Copps as party president
OTTAWA
— Federal Liberals have elected the former head of the partyÕs Ontario
wing Mike Crawley as their new party president, choosing him over Chretien-era,
former cabinet minister Sheila Copps. Crawley and Copps were said to be the two front-runners in what was
deemed to be a very tight, and hotly contested race.
Harper names seven new senators
OTTAWA — Ottawa police Chief Vern White is
among seven new senators appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The list
also includes Betty Unger, who ran for ÒelectionÓ to the Senate and is the
first woman elected to the post. Bert Brown, whoÕs in the Senate
now, was also selected through a vote.

Liberals fund Ôa scandalÕ: Opposition
TORONTO
— The Opposition suggests OntarioÕs Liberal government may be using a
community grant program as a slush fund to reward friends and supporters, just
like it did with grants for multicultural organizations four years ago. Liberal
Mike Colle was forced to resign as Citizenship
Minister in 2007 after the auditor general concluded millions of dollars were
handed out to various ethnic groups with virtually no rules or procedures.
